So Close, Yet So Far Away: What May Prevent Me from Paying Off My Credit Card Debt

Posted on August 18, 2014 by Double Debt Single Woman

falling at finish line

I’m so close to paying this infernal credit card off. Only 3 or 4 months left. I’m so close to winning this race…

But something may cause me to stumble and fall before I can cross the finish line.

“What?”, you ask.  Sigh…….  Medical expenses.

I’ve not been feeling very well for the past few months, an acutely so in the past week or two.  I have an appointment to see a doctor and get some lab work done for my immediate concerns. The other ongoing health issues, I’m hoping will hold out until this Winter when I’ve had some time to save up some money.

I have a high-deductible HSA, which means I have to pay thousands of dollars out of pocket before any help kicks in. In a health care world where diagnostic blood tests can run over $3,000 (and often come back inconclusive), you can see why some of us ‘play chicken’ with our health. We put the doctor’s visits off  again and again and try to save money. We wait until the medical diagnosis is so severe that treatment costs more than all the money they we ‘saved’.

I really hope that this new issue resolves itself and that I can keep body and soul together until Winter or possibly Spring, when I’ll have the cash saved up to at least cover the deductible portion of any medical procedures that I will need…  There goes any hope of  saving up for a trip to go…anywhere.

Sigh. Why can’t things ever be simple?

About Me

I am Denise, a 40-something single woman living in the U.S. This blog chronicles my slow climb out of deep debt. My “double debt” refers to the $140+K twin terrors of student loan debt ($112,000+) and credit card debt ($30,000+). “Single woman” will address the difficult choices, challenges, and opportunities that those without partners experience when dealing with large debt alone.

After my wake up call (financial trauma) of losing my job in 2013 while carrying over $140,000 in debt, I embarked on the path of extreme saving and minimalism to get my finances in order and ensure some measure of security for my later years.

Here, I write about my successes and failures along with my hopes and fears. I am currently living on 30% of my take home pay, while the other 70% goes toward debt payoff and savings. It’s not easy, but nothing worth doing ever is. Follow my journey…
